Prof. Steve Pavlakis

Currently, I am the director of Pediatric Neurology at SUNY Downstate Medical Center and affiliated hospitals. I was recently the Director of the Center for Brain and Behavior at the Infants and Childrens’ Hospital, Maimonides Medical Center as well as the Chief Science Officer for the Maimonides Medical Center. I am a professor of Neurology at SUNY Downstate. My research interests include pediatric genetic and mitochondrial diseases as well as cerebral vascular disease. I have been involved with multiple NIH grants and projects and have been on countless study sections for NINDS and NHLBI. I review for many journals and am on the editorial board on one presently. I write a monthly byline to elaborate on the important and controversial topics in my field. I have collaborated with other doctors and institutions nationally and internationally. For example, in 2000, I was a founding member of the International Pediatric Stroke Study (IPSS) started in London England, which is a data set that has enrolled over 3000 stroke children and resulted in several NIH grants and over twenty manuscripts. The IPSS has been important in spearheading research and fellowship programs in pediatric stroke since up until the beginning of the last decade, the field was under recognized and under studied. As Chief Scientific Officer of the Maimonides Medical Center (Office of Health Science Research), I ran a fully functional animal laboratory, wet labs, Institutional Review Board, a grants office and a clinical trials unit. I was on the board of the Maimonides Research Foundation which has an endowment (11 million dollars) dedicated to the funding of starter research grants for faculty. The Office of Health Science and Research further promoted research by training residents across all disciplines in clinical and basic research matters (450 residents). As part of this we developed an innovative funding program for residents that, with coaching, resulted in independent research. In the private sector, I have been an angel investor in 4 companies and am on the Board of Directors of one company called “The Chisel” dedicated to becoming a non partisan platform for the discussion of policy. I am on the advisory board of Simulconsult, a clinical database of phenotypes, now allowing integration with genotypes. It was a teaching and clinical tool and is now used as a genotype-phenotype database.
