Dr. Zvonka Rener Primec

Professor Zvonka Rener Primec works as a paediatrician and consultant in child neurology at the Department of Child Neurology, University Paediatric Hospital Ljubljana and at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Ljubljana. She is an expert in epilepsies, non-epileptic paroxysmal disorders, headache and stroke in children. In 2005 she introduced VNS treatment in Slovenia. Since the beginning of her career, her clinical research has been into the impact of severe epileptic activity and its influence in the first years of life, during the period of rapid postnatal brain development. Her current research continues on epilepsies, headaches in childhood and the role of genetic defence in perinatal hypoxia. She studied clinical epileptology of the French school under the mentorship of Dr Charlotte Dravet, Dr Michelle Bureau and Dr Pierre Genton at the Centre St. Paul in Marseille, France in 1993. During next decades she collaborated with the epilepsy surgical centres in Grenoble, Vogtareuth-Germany and Fondation Rotchild in Paris. Influenced by Professor John BP Stephenson, she became interested in non-epileptic paroxysmal disorders in early childhood. As an experienced clinician in University Paediatric Hospital Ljubljana she is also a dedicated teacher who shares her knowledge, enthusiasm and clinical expertise with undergraduate and postgraduate students in lectures, seminars and during daily work with patients. She is also a mentor to younger generations of doctors. Professor Rener Primec is an active member of the Slovenian Medical Association, a member of the Medical Chamber of Slovenia, a national coordinator for specialization in child neurology, a member of Paediatric and Child Neurology Section, Section for Clinical Neurophysiology, Section for Neurology, Section for Epilepsy and the Slovenian chapter of ILAE. Professor Rener Primec is also a member in international societies: the French chapter of ILAE since 1993, EPNS since 1999, ICNA since 2006, a member of the Editorial Board of the European Journal of Paediatric Neurology and a Board member of the European Paediatric Neurology Society.
